Summer School Readiness Group
Are you looking for a school readiness program in the Eastern Suburbs, Sydney?
Starting big school is an exciting step for every child and every family.
Our School Readiness Group is a small, play-based speech pathology program that runs in the January school holidays.
It helps your child walk into Kindergarten feeling confident, understood and ready to join in.
Why this group exists?
From the very first day, the classroom asks a lot of a child's communication. Children are expected to:
follow instructions given to the whole class
ask a teacher for help or let someone know what they need
listen to stories, answer questions and share their ideas
Some children find these moments easier to learn in a small, predictable group before school starts. This group gives them a calm space to practise with people who understand them, so the first weeks of school feel familiar instead of overwhelming.
What is it?
A small group of 6 children with 2 speech pathologists
4 sessions in January with 3 hours per day
Held at our clinic in Rose Bay
The same predictable routine every session, supported by a visual timetable
A new picture book each session, plus sound and listening games and a hands-on activities
Practice with real school routines, like unpacking a bag and opening a lunchbox at recess
Goals in oral language, early literacy (including recognising their own name) and classroom routines
A home practice tip after every session
It feels like play, and every activity has a clear speech pathology goal behind it. We use evidence-based approaches including shared book reading, phonological awareness games and structured questioning.
Who is it for?
This group may suit your child if they:
are starting Kindergarten in 2027
are building confidence with talking, listening or following instructions
find big or busy groups tricky and do best in small, predictable settings
would benefit from practising school routines before day one
are working on early literacy skills, like recognising their name or hearing sounds in words
Children who are autistic or neurodivergent are very welcome, and a diagnosis isn't needed. All communication counts here, including words, signs, gestures, pictures and AAC.
What does a day look like?
Arrival: find your name, pop your bag away and settle in
Morning circle: hello song, days of the week and our feeling of the day
Sound game and book of the week: listening, rhyming and story time
Activity of the day: a hands-on activity, like a dig tub or craft
Recess: wash hands, open your lunchbox and practise asking for help
Small groups and goodbye: name and letter games, then pack up and home
Every session follows the same routine (similar to school), so children always know what's coming next. Movement breaks and sensory supports are available whenever they're needed.
Who runs it?
The group is run by our speech pathologists at Kids Spot.
Our approach is play-based and neurodiversity-affirming. We start with your child's strengths and build skills in a way that respects how they communicate and learn.
Each session has clear speech pathology goals, and at pick up you'll hear about your child's wins and get a simple idea to try at home. We're here to help your child feel ready for school, not to change who they are.
