What to Ask Your Child’s Speech Pathologist (and What to Expect)

Beginning the journey of working with a speech pathologist can be an uncertain step for many families. It’s natural to want clarity about what therapy involves, how progress will be tracked, and what outcomes you can expect. Given that speech therapy is also financial and time based commitment, parents and carers deserve transparency, guidance, and support every step of the way.

Asking the right questions will help you to feel confident, informed, and engaged in your child’s therapy. It will also lay the foundation for what to expect and ensure the best outcomes towards achieving functional outcomes and faster achievement of goals.

Below are some helpful questions you can ask a speech therapist, to ensure a  high-quality and family-centred service.

1. “What goals are we working on, and how will we measure progress?”

Therapy should always be goal-driven with clear, functional outcomes that can be seen in day to day interactions. Instead of generic goals, you should expect goals that relate directly to your child’s daily life such as their ability to articulate specific speech sounds, use new vocabulary and sentence types, spell and read with greater accuracy and comprehension, participate using more turns in play with others, reduce frustration, building social connections, or developing parent skills in specific areas.

At Kids Spot, we prioritise setting and reviewing goals each term to ensure goals remain relevant, realistic, and aligned with your child’s stage of development. These goals are created collaboratively with you and adjusted as your child grows and progresses.

2. “How long will therapy take?”

This is one of the most common and valid questions carers ask when starting their journey. Whilst this not a question we can often answer straight away, we can explain the factors that influence the duration of therapy. This is often related to how often sessions occur (weekly, fortnightly, monthly), the amount of home practice you can do, the underlying skill development and learning style of your child as well as the complexity of your child’s communication needs.

Usually a supportive speech pathologist will be able to give you a realistic understanding of what short-term wins may look like within 4-6 weeks of starting session, as well as what longer-term growth may require. The most part of this process is being open and honest with your therapist about your understanding of goals and strategies, as well as your ability to implement home-based practice.

We understand that structured homework is not always possible and are here to support you to integrate practice into daily tasks wherever possible.

3. “How much homework should we expect?”

Parents often want to know what their role looks like between sessions. A quality service will provide structured support with ideas for daily integration, not overwhelming demands.

At Kids Spot, families receive:

  • Clear weekly homework tasks, tailored to your child

  • Play-based suggestions or routines for embedding strategies into daily routines

  • Guidance to help you practice without pressure or battle

Homework should complement family life, not complicate it.

4. “What kind of feedback will we receive during or after sessions?”

Lets acknowledge that therapy is an investment. You deserve transparency when investing in therapy.

At Kids Spot, we always encourage families to join in on sessions and find that a carers active engagement often yields better and faster results. It is through guided practice that everyone can learn new skills develop - this extends to parents and carers.

We provide a safe environment for you to learn the skills to help your child to communicate. Your speech pathologist should include you in the therapy journey, share regular updates, tips and coaching strategies so you always know how to support your child, what they are working on and how they are progressing.

Kids Spot provides weekly clinical notes shared directly with families and the child’s broader care team—teachers, educators, carers, and other professionals. This ensures everyone supporting your child is working together and using consistent strategies.

5. “What resources and supports are included in the cost of therapy?”

Speech therapy fees should reflect more than the time spent in the room. Behind the scenes, therapists spend time planning sessions, writing notes, preparing resources, collaborating with educators, and developing home programs.

At Kids Spot, families can expect:

  • Personalised visual supports, worksheets, and guidance

  • Collaborative strategies for teachers and early educators

  • Carefully planned therapy goals with evidence-based approaches with functional outcome in mind

  • Open communication and shared decision-making

A Partnership Built on Respect and Collaboration

The best speech therapy outcomes occur when families are informed, empowered, and involved.

By asking these key questions, you can ensure that your child’s therapy is purposeful, well-structured, and specific to their unique needs.

At Kids Spot, we value collaboration and connection with families and a child’s wider community, celebrating their strengths, supporting communication in all its forms, and striving for meaningful, functional outcomes that make everyday life easier and more connected.
