Starting Speech Therapy for you Child

01

Intake call and Assessment booked

Our practice manager will take your call, ask questions and gather information to get clear on how we can help. This call determines what sort of appointment is required and important information the reason for your call.

Once an appointment is booked, you will receive a confirmation email and an online intake form to fill out. This helps us prepare for your first appointment and get to know your child before we meet them.

02

Assessment or Initial session appointment and report written

Most initial appointments will begin with an assessment (unless you have recently had a relevant assessment and can supply us with the report).

Our assessments are tailored to your child’s needs. We don’t believe in unnecessary assessment and in some cases an assessment will look like a play session and the therapist will gather lots of important information using play and by asking you specific questions.

All assessments include a written report. We believe that having written clarity about your child’s strengths and weaknesses will help you understand how your child engages with the world and why. It also helps you to decide on the most important goals we can work towards for the biggest impact on functional skills.

03

Management Plan session with family - Goals set

Research tells us that goal setting is the most important factor for achieving a goal. Following your assessment, you will work with your therapist to set a specific family goal and other subgoals that are designed to help your child progress on their journey to develop skills for life in the world. The goals we set with you will be: S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

04

Weekly Therapy and Carer Coaching

Our families are active participants in sessions. We believe you are your child’s most important teacher and advocate. Our aim is to support and coach you to develop skills that can be integrated throughout your week. This will help your child to generalise new skills learnt during a session.

Once every 3 months we arrange a Preschool or school visit, collaborate with other professionals and develop resources where required.

05

Management plan review meeting

Goals require review and celebration and we do this every 3 months as a way of keeping tabs on progress and ensuring that our goals are realistic and achievable. It is these review meetings that keep us all accountable for the journey and progress we have made.

06

Discharge

Once your child’s goals have been achieved, it is time for discharge. Sometimes children are discharged for a period as they have a break from therapy, at other times, we might not see them again (unless it’s out and about in the community when we love to connect and celebrate their wins)
