What Are WH Questions and Why Are They So Important for Kids?
“WH questions” are questions that start with words like who, what, where, when, why, and how. These questions are a big part of everyday talking and learning.
Why are WH questions so important for children and their success in both education and communication?
They form the foundation for having a conversation. Consider a common interaction your child may have with a relative or friend: “oh hey James! How are you, what did you do for your birthday? Who came to your party, Where did you have the party OR what was your favourite part of the day? All of these questions ask something different of your child and require different vocabulary and grammar to answer.
They support learning at school. Teachers often use WH questions to solidify what is being taught and check that concepts have been understood e.g. “What do plants need to grow?” or “Where does the story take place?”.
They help children understand others. When a child can answer WH questions, they can follow along with stories, instructions, and conversations.
They build thinking skills. WH questions encourage children to notice details, remember information, and make connections (for example: “Why is the boy sad?”).
They help children share ideas. When children learn to ask their own WH questions, they can find out more about the world, make friends, and join in play.
